Welcome to the “Incredible” Iota Gamma Omega Chapter!
I am extremely proud and honored to have the privilege of representing and leading the over 500 members of the “Incredible” Iota Gamma Omega Chapter as its President! We are a large, intergenerational chapter, with a warm and loving spirit and a big heart evidenced in our commitment to “Exemplifying “Excellence through Sustainable Service”. If you are looking for chapter to reactivate with and/or are just visiting the area, we invite you to visit us. Our chapter meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month (except July and August) at the Charles Herbert Flowers High School, 10001 Ardwick Ardmore Road, Springdale, MD 20774. The official meeting starts at 10 AM, however, if you come early, you can visit with us before the meeting during Soror Café, which begins at 9:00 AM.
As we enter into a new decade, the members of Iota Gamma Omega Chapter are beaming with pride and excitement as we begin a yearlong 50th Anniversary celebration honoring the vision of 24 extraordinary women who worked diligently to make Iota Gamma Omega, the first African American fraternal organization chartered in Prince George’s County, on November 14, 1970!
Over these past 50 years, we have made significant impacts in the community and we are committed to leaving a legacy of sustained service by providing much needed services to the residents of Prince George’s County that fill various educational, health, and social gaps created by an ever-changing economic environment. In keeping with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. National Program of “Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service”, we have a very comprehensive program of services which includes enhancing educational achievement through tutoring, scholarships, mentoring, social development and assisting with the college application process programs; encouraging healthy lifestyles through health education and sizable contributions to various medical research organizations; supporting families in need through our shoe bank, and donations to the Lions Club and Soles to Souls organizations; strengthening our connection to all residents by working with elderly residents at a rehabilitation center; and celebrating the arts by exposing our youth to various forms of the fine arts. And, we continue to enhance our fundraising efforts by garnering support from current and new corporate partners.
I am extremely grateful for the leadership of those who served before me and our members who volunteer their time and resources to help us leave a remarkable legacy of “Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service” in Prince George’s County. “Together, we are extraordinary women doing extraordinary things” as members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Iota Gamma Omega Chapter!
Sisterly yours in Service to All Mankind,
Cheryl W. Owens
