April 21, 2016 - IGO successfully co-sponsored a well-attended presentation with the Afro-American History Society at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland on April 21, 2016. The guest speaker was Mr. Shane Bolles Walsh (son of Soror Lynn Bolles), a PhD student in American studies and a Teaching Assistant in the African American Studies Department at the University of Maryland College Park. Mr. Walsh’s presentation, “Paul Robeson and the House Un-American Activities Committee through the Use of Legislative Records" examined the forced testimony of Paul Leroy Robeson on June 12, 1956 before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) through the use of the legislative records collection at the National Archives in Washington DC. These Congressional records provide direct insight into the discourses surrounding race, citizenship, and nationality during the height of the post Korean War red scare. These House records also document one of Paul Robeson’s most extraordinary performances in the face of blatant injustice and ritualized government stagecraft.
