May 21, 2016 - Baltimore, MD: Iota Gamma Omega Chapter participated in the NAMI Walks Maryland, an annual 2 mile fundraiser held in Baltimore. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) is in partnership to increase mental health awareness in the African American community. NAMI is the country’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of the millions of Americans affected by mental illness and relies on contributions to support its important work. Team IGO AKA earned the honorable distinction as the #2 Top Team in the State of Maryland by raising over $6,000 in contributions for NAMI’s Prince Georges County, MD Affiliate. Team Captain, IGO member, Miriam Martin was the #3 Fundraiser in the State. There were 19 team members - most of whom attended despite the rainy forecast. Iota Gamma Omega Chapter is dedicated to continuing to cultivate its partnership with NAMI in our joint mission to alleviate the stigma associated with mental illness in our communities. Thanks to all who participated in the event and contributed to the team’s efforts.
May 17, 2016, Upper Marlboro, MD: Council Member Karen R. Toles, Prince George’s County Council (D-D7) and Chair of the Health, Education, and Human Services Committee, presented a proclamation to the County’s National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter at the recent County Council hearing. The proclamation, given during National Mental Health Awareness Month, recognized the NAMI chapter’s significant work to address mental health issues in the County.
