On Saturday, March 18, 2017, our captain (chair, Denise Patterson McKenney) formally announced that Mardi Gras had arrived at Forestville. As the residents received their favors (beads, hats and masks etc.) each found a seat to settle in for a program of fun and activities.
The program began with our special monthly trivia and since we were recognizing the month of March activities, Mardi gras and March Madness the residents chose which category they wanted to answer. A sample of some of the questions, consisted of: How many teams go to the Big Dance” answer: 68. Which college or university was the first to play 5 African American players as starters answer: Texas Western College? This college went down in history because the year they played they won the NCAA championship (1966) over powerhouse Kentucky. Because of the unexpected win players at the college level could not include the Slam Dunk in their plays. It took 10 years (1976) to bring it back into the game.
Mardi gras question: Which city and state in the United States has the longest bragging rights for celebrating Mardi gras?
Answer: Mobile, Alabama (since 1703, New Orleans was not until 1718).
We engaged in our bingo games and closed the program out with our special rendition of “When the Saints Come Marching In”.
