Over 30 community volunteers participated in a rainy day of landscaping new flower beds adjacent to the primary children’s playground and courtyard at District Heights Elementary School. Iota Gamma Omega Chapter members, members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Pi Chapter, District Heights Elementary School Principal, Marlowe Blount-Rich (Xi Zeta Omega Chapter) and her staff were joined by District Heights residents and friends to plant mums, pansies, and perennial plants for Phase 1 of the Refresh, Restore, and Renew project at the school. Volunteers were provided with information from the Prince George’s County Department of the Environment on its environmental initiatives and were treated to refreshments donated by Wegmans and Safeway. The Ivy Community Charities of Prince George’s County provided funding for the event and Patuxent Home and Garden in Bowie, MD provided wholesale pricing for the landscaping materials. The Environmental Ownership Committee sponsored the activity in furtherance of Target IV and is planning Phase 2 of the project for May 2017.
The District Heights Elementary School courtyard was dedicated to the memory of Prince George’s County educator, Ms. Ertie F. Barnes. Ms. Barnes was an Iota Gamma Omega Charter Member and Second President who became an Ivy Beyond the Wall in September. IGO President, Saran T. Baker, First Vice-President, Deidre N. Jackson, Second Vice-President, Shauna Berry Cooke, and the Ivy Community Charities Executive Director Cheryl Petty Garnette presented a plaque and two pink and green benches to the school to recognize the occasion. Iota Gamma Omega Chapter has adopted District Heights Elementary School and its courtyard is maintained by the Environmental Ownership Committee. The courtyard serves as a quiet play space and sustainable garden for students.
